Why We Like The Santa Cruz Chameleon MX D Mountain Bike
Revamped for whatever kind of riding we can imagine, the mixed-wheel Santa Cruz Chameleon MX D Mountain bike is our go-to hardtail for everything from backcountry epics to urban shredding. Now in its 8th generation, our favorite hardtail gets updated geometry and a mixed-wheel setup with a 29in front wheel for supreme rollover and a 27.5in rear wheel for quick turning and responsiveness. Whatever the trail throws at us we stay comfortable and confident aboard Santa Cruz's legendary hardtail.
Geometry on the MX Chameleon sees slacker and longer numbers without going off the deep end. This MX version of the bike gets a 65-degree head-tube angle which means better rollover capability and more confidence on steep terrain. Wheelbase numbers are increased with the Chameleon enjoying a 1207mm wheelbase on a size large for greater stability when we're pushing this hardtail to the limits. The bike isn't all about flat-out speed like the numbers suggest, as the 27.5in wheel in the rear keeps things playful and lively for jumps, jibs, and manuals.
Made for going just about anywhere, the Chameleon spins up big climbs with SRAM's reliable Eagle 12-speed drivetrain outfitted with an 11-50t cassette. The Chameleon gets a 130mm RockShox Rekon up front to handle all the technical trails we can find with adjustable rebound and a lockout for extended climbs. The frame also receives ISCG-05 tabs on the bottom bracket for chain guide mounting, meaning our dreams of taking a hardtail to an enduro race are that much closer to reality.
*Due to a high demand in the global supply chain and bike industry since the start of the pandemic, material weight and exact components are subject to change. We are working diligently to keep tech specs updated, and any adjustments will be of equal or better spec level.
