Why We Like The Shimano RC903 S-PHYRE Cycling Shoe

Built specifically for road racing, the high-performance Shimano RC903 S-PHYRE Cycling Shoes are engineered to get you to the finish line with unmatched speed, power, and efficiency. The upper of the shoe is wrapped in 360º reinforced micro-fiber leather with perforated venting, allowing for excellent breathability, and is secured with dual BOA Li2 dials for quick adjustments, minimal pressure points, and a snug fit to your foot. DYNALAST technology reduces fatigue on longer rides by keeping your foot securely in place, while an anti-twist heel cup adds stability to the heel as you apply max power to the pedals during a breakaway or field sprint.

Grabbed these on a sale, and I do like getting new shoes. I'm a 10.5 in dress shoes, sneakers, basically everything, regular width. Of note, I do have high arches, I know, rare in the days of collapsed arches and bad feet due to no exercising. I went for a size 45 in these shoes, and they fit well. With a thin summer style sock, I could have maybe convinced myself to use a 44.5 all the same, but I ride year round, and do wear a thicker-but-still-thin merino wool sock in the winter that takes up the space, but I basically followed the size chart and it fit true to size. I'm a 44.5 in LG, 45 in Sidi, 44.5 in Fizik, 44 in Bont, 44.5 in Giro, so basically I don't notice a whole ton of variation in shoe manufacturers and can make it work. The included adjustable arch insoles do provide some extra pressure while pedaling, but it's not quite enough for me, so I do run my G8 insoles in these. I have another set of footbeds I've had made that I also switch around as needed, but there is room if you go that route. Nothing to note with them negative, they fit well, have some give as your foot spreads during a pedal stroke, you can cinch them down without pressure points, and the new micro-adjustable Boa dials on shoes are fantastic. They are much less bulky too, thinner profile knobs maybe is the right description. ' Shoes are subjective, but no hot spots, not even with the stock insoles, but I do like the G8s as I can tune them more. I'm an oddity with high arches and high instep, shoes do work fine for me, and the heel cup doesn't slide at all. They are quite airy, which is great on hot days or indoors, but you'll need a cover sooner than others for sure with these. I like the airy shoes vs the swamp fest. I run my center of cleat position 190mm from the back of my heel, and if I take a Look cleat, jam it back, it's basically dead on. The Shimano shoes do have another 5mm (ish) of adjustment if you adjust the red spacers around the cleat nuts, but I'm good with mine where they are. They are adjustable from inside, cut through the cover, move them around, tape cover back down. Great shoes for sure, I had a pair of the 900's long ago and they lasted a really long time, even with bad weather riding and all of that. I expect these will be the same.

I was a bit worried moving on from a very old but cushy pair of Giro shoes I had been riding in for a decade. But even though these are a bit narrower, the closure is terrific and allows for very granular adjustments. They're also lighter and stiffer than my old shoes, and the ventilation in the sole actually works -- I can feel a stream of air under my foot when I am descending, which is a new and welcome experience. Just an excellent product all around.

I'm another former Sidi loyalist. That said, I am delighted with these shoes. Construction and finish is first rate. The Boa system provides very precise, even pressure distribution across my instep and heel retention is even better than my old Sidis (which had the special heel retention system). Very stiff, very light and well ventilated. They are narrow in width at the toe box, but quite generous in the vertical dimension. My feet are narrow and not very thick, so I actually needed to reduce volume and switched to Specialized BG Blue insoles. For reference with respect to size, the Specialized insoles in 42-43 length fit my new size 43.5 S-Phyres exactly. The heel pad of the S-Phyres does not appear to be replaceable and sole protection at the toe is minimal, so I share a bit of the concern voiced by other reviewers about long-term durability. For now, I'll just tread lightly when I'm off the bike, as these are totally worth some extra TLC.

I’m a longtime Sidi rider, with narrow feet, but I much prefer Boa closures to Sidi’s dials. I’d tried other shoes, but they didn’t fit my feet as well as the Sidis. These shoes *do*. Based on other reviews I’d read, I got these a full size larger than my Sidi Shots - 43 vs 42, and the fit is just right. The last feels very similar to the Sidis. The heel pocket is nice and snug, and my feet don’t move around in the forefoot. My only concern is that these these shoes aren’t as sturdy as the Sidis, and probably won’t hold up as long, but I’m not one for wearing a pair of shoes for ten years - so they’ll probably be fine.

Really, really wanted to like these. While Specialized is moving toward roomier toe boxes, Shimano has stuck with their narrower fit.
