Why We Like The Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Alloy Frame
Modeled after the original Stumpjumper, the Stumpjumper EVO Alloy gets a bump in travel to 150mm for shredding the rowdier lines on the mountain. Specialized spent countless hours refining their FSR suspension kinematics on the EVO, resulting in improved pedaling performance and a smoother feel over square-edged hits. The bombproof M5 alloy construction is made to take a beating, so we don't worry too much if we miss our line and have to bail and send the bike tumbling into the trees.
The Stumpjumper is long, low, and slack for a stable feel when we're monster-trucking through the rocks. The 64.5-degree head tube is slacker than the standard Stumpy, which is right in line with this bike's intended purpose of seeking out rough black-diamond terrain. That being said, the head tube angle is adjustable via headset cups, so we can slacken it all the way to 63-degrees for shuttle laps and lift-assisted park days. Though the bike is intended to roll on 29-inch wheels, you can run it mullet-style with a 27.5 rear wheel using Specialized's aftermarket MulletLink (sold separately).
The Stumpjumper EVO Alloy uses Specialized's S-Sizing system, which we love because it lets us select our frame size based on reach and wheelbase preferences. Because all frame sizes have low standover heights and short seat tubes, many riders can comfortably ride two different sizes. Some riders may prefer going with a smaller size if they're into tight, technical, backcountry terrain or for jumping, while the larger size supplies added stability in steeper, faster terrain.
